Nunawading Cricket Club present and past players fondly remember George Wilson, who passed away on Monday Jan 23, as a character larger than life who we always heard before we saw. George was a great bloke and as tough as nails both on and off the field.
George, or Putty Nose as he was affectionately known, played at Nuna for 11 seasons from 1979-1990. He started at Nuna as he wanted to play with his son Mark and went on to captain the club’s 6ths, 7ths and 8ths. George was both a firey character and bowler. He took 186 wickets at 14.9 and made over 1400 runs at just over 16 including 4 half centuries, not bad for a bowler ! George was often in the middle of heated conversations on the field and, of course, the other bloke started it. We used to love listening to his stories and the club passes on it sympathies and condolences to wife Jude and son, and ex Nuna player Mark.
The funeral is in the Boyd Chapel, Springvale Crematorium on Monday Jan. 30 at 1.15 p.m. No flowers by request. In lieu, donations to the Heart Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
